Wine Description & Tasting Notes
The FMC is Ken Forrester’s iconic ideology of the perfect Chenin Blanc. If you think you know Chenin Blanc this is a mind blowing, next level, reimagination of that. Chenin Blanc from Old vines (some of which are over 100 years old!), some which are affected by botrytis, are wild fermented 50% in new french oak barrels and 50% in used french oak and aged for 12 months on the lees.
To make sure only the best grapes make it to this wine they selectively harvest the grapes only at their peak which can require up to 10 harvests!
HOW TO MAKE THE PERFECT CHENIN?
“All I can say is I wish I knew.” – Ken Forrester, aka the godfather of South African wine & founder of Ken forrester wines.
“Each year, each vintage, each harvest is different – different rainfall, climatic differences, rainfall, temperatures etc. and all of this way beyond the control of the winemaker. The one thing that is very clear, is the fact that the flavours in the vineyard will dictate the style and flavour of wine you make. Sun-ripened fruit with its glorious yellow, the golden hue will taste different to the darker green fruit hiding, luxuriating in the shade of the canopy. Chenin is the most delicious wine and it is totally at home barefoot or in high heels and a dinner suit. It’s the ability to wear so many mantles is quite fascinating and something of ongoing exploration for me.
The pinnacle of what we consider to be the finest expression of the grapes of this varietal – an icon chenin, a challenge to the world! Rich, layered with dried apricot, vanilla and honey. Will gain additional complexity with cellaring.”
Nose: Melons, pears, peach stones and mouth-watering greengages are supported by nutty oak, minerals, and a fresh, kiwi fruit acidity.
Palate: Full-bodied with a rich texture, balanced by a backbone of acidity. Flavors of ripe pear, apricot, and tropical fruit are complemented by notes of vanilla, honey and oak, leading to a long and satisfying finish. For sure to develop beautifully with cellar ageing.
Food Pairings: Enjoy with special friends as an exciting aperitif or with spiced dishes, even mild seafood/shellfish or curries. Great with exotic Eastern spiced foods.
Vineyard History:
Established in 1993, Ken Forrester Vineyards is situated on the historic Scholtzenhof farm in Stellenbosch, South Africa. The farm’s origins date back to 1689, making it one of the oldest in the region. Ken Forrester and his wife, Teresa, acquired the then-derelict property and undertook extensive renovations to restore both the vineyards and the homestead. Their dedication has positioned the estate at the forefront of the Chenin Blanc revival, producing award-winning wines that have garnered international acclaim.
Wine Region Information:
Stellenbosch, located in South Africa’s Western Cape, is renowned for its rich winemaking heritage and diverse terroirs. The region’s Mediterranean climate, characterized by warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters, provides an ideal environment for viticulture. The Helderberg sub-region, where Ken Forrester Vineyards is situated, benefits from cooling maritime influences, contributing to the complexity and balance of the wines produced here.
The FMC stands as a testament to the potential of Chenin Blanc in South Africa, offering a luxurious and memorable tasting experience that reflects the passion and expertise of its creators.
